Familiarity can sometimes numb us to how very unique a movie is, and that is certainly the case with THE AFRICAN QUEEN. Most polls that have been done in current years typically denote Humphrey Bogart as the greatest movie star of all time, and frequently Katherine Hepburn gets the number two slot (and always gets the number one slot for women) . Yet, these roles are almost antithetical to everything else they ever did. Bogart, the gargantuan man of action of CASABLANCA and THE MALTESE FALCON and THE Large SLEEP, is reduced to a dirty, disheveled, lewd, drunken captain of a remarkably inconsequential boat with the profoundly self-mocking name of “The African Queen.” Hepburn, who has made her career playing unbridled, liberated, and self-assertive recent women, here is a prudish (though only for a while), repressed, tightly hurt spinster. But despite this highly original pairing, the film was one of the finest that either was ever in, netting Bogart his only Oscar (and unbelievably, only one of three nominations) and Hepburn what was something like her 200th Oscar nomination. It seems perverse that the only other two nominations were for Best Director (Huston) and screenplay (the large James Agee and Huston) . I’m not distinct how a film can regain nominations for four of the top five awards and not fetch nominated for Best Relate, but it did (the five films nominated that year were the deserving AN AMERICAN IN PARIS [the winner], the somewhat censored A STREET CAR NAMED DESIRE, A Spot IN THE SUN [which has not old well], and the considerably less deserving QUO VADIS and DECISION BEFORE DAWN) .

Today we assume filming on site for granted, but in the 1940s and 1950s, few producers and directors opted for filming on the station upon which the film was supposed to seize region. Films might go to a well-known locale and shoot a couple of scenes for realistic flavoring, as with a couple of scenes in ON THE TOWN or AN AMERICAN IN PARIS. Many Westerns had been shot on dwelling, but that was no substantial challenge given the conclude proximity of Hollywood to Western locales. What is crucial is the great dynamics between Bogart and Hepburn, as they go from loathing one another, to liking, and then to loving. It has to be the most unlikely appreciate sage in the history of film, and yet somehow these two gigantic actors not only manage to sell it, but build it quietly majestic. There is not great in the intention of cast to sing of, apart from the two leads. Robert Morley manages a puny but memorable fraction approach the beginning of the film, but Bogart and Hepburn utterly dominate the film’s onscreen time. Luckily, they have no pain pulling it off.

As unusual as this film was, there had been attempts to do it into a film for quite some time. If one is familiar with Bette Davis’s career, there had been a couple of attempts to film it with her in the lead with various leading men (including James Mason) . But surely Katherine Hepburn is the perfect Rose Sayer. Like in THE PHILADELPHIA Record, she can communicate self-righteousness better than anyone. Davis would only have managed egotistical haughtiness. But I’m determined everyone would agree that the casting ended up being for the best.

Bogart and Hepburn play two diametrically opposed personalities in this classic film location during World War I. She is a prim and generous, middle-aged English missionary. He is a gin-soaked river rat living by trading up and down the Congo River from a ramshackle conventional steamboat named The African Queen. They are thrown together by a German offensive that leaves them isolated and in inconvenience of being captured and held as prisoners of war (or worse, they could be shot as spies) . To sprint, they must recede down the river past the Germans. What follows is fraction comedy, allotment tense drama, and piece high adventure. The river and its wildlife pose as remarkable of an obstacle as the Germans, and Bogart and Hepburn must not only learn to secure along, but to trust in, and rely on, each other to survive.

This is a unbelievable movie. The acting is wonderful (Bogie got an Oscar for “Best Actor”), the tale is fine, and the scenery is fine (it was shot on spot) . They honest don’t fabricate build them any better than this, and I can’t imagine any reason why anyone would NOT want this in their collection. Very highly recommended.

There is always more beneath the surface of a Marcel Carne film. It’s all in the details such as the shots of a one-eared teddy fill in the attic reflecting the distress of the man about to be scared by the police. This movie – a precursor of film noir – begins almost at the waste when an just laborer, beaten down by the system, kills another man out of passion and has to mask in an attic until the police finally rupture down the door..at daybreak. (French law provided that the police could not enter until dawn) . The fable of the events leading to this shadowy ending is told in flashback. There is an eerie sense of fear everywhere. For example the hero (or shall I say anti-hero) works as a sandblaster in a factory and when he works, he is sealed in a cool suit of metal…all the while dim, demonic shadows abound or sulfurous fumes elope. In the same scene, a flower girl arrives but loses the freshness of her plants because of the smoke.

Made in 1939, the film is also a warning to France which was on the eve of war with Fascist Germany and itself holed itself up – in isolation – until the inevitable anguish. (The Vichy government which collaborated with the Nazis forbade the showing of the film0.

As in so many of the mammoth Marcel Carne films, the director is obsessed with doomed cherish. In those dim, edgy days leading up to the war, it must have seemed to Marcel Carne that happiness, while precious, is short lived – always on the verge of being snuffed out callously.

I cannot fault the pitch perfect, dusky performance of Jean Gabin. Ogle his eyes as he awaits his inevitable doom. Gabin – as Francois – portrays a sympathetic, bruised man. He loves an orphan perhaps because he himself was an orphan.

Of all Marcel Carne films, “Le Jour se Leve” is his most compelling metaphor for the impending pains awaiting France. Poetic realism indeed.

A very bleak but sterling film. Jean Gabin is always watchable but this is a improbable performance, fine and tragic. My one pickle with this particular copy of the film is that the quality is not spacious and the subtitles do not translate every line, or even every other line. It has inspired me to brush up on my French, but when you recall a film with subtitles you query at least most of the dialogue to be subtitled. A actual shame.

This is an obviously low-budget affair, but don’t let that dissuade you from at least screening this film.

Set in the waning days of the Korean War, the record revolves around a unique replacement (Robert Redford), who joins an infantry unit on the front lines. As he experiences the bitter taste of war, he tries to understand the meaning of it all. Meanwhile, he is concerned over the psychotic lone wolf in the outfit (John Saxon), and his bizzare attachment to a young Korean kid. Saxon’s character is a successful killing machine, but unaccustomed to fitting in with people.

The main selling point is, of course, the film debut of Robert Redford. Redford is edifying here, even at a relatively young age. Redford has always been splendid at playing unbiased, good-guy straight shooters, and his debut as Pvt. Roy Loomis is no exception. However, it really has to be said that, for as proper as the young Redford is, it is John Saxon who steals the expose as the brooding, psychotic killing machine, Endore. If you don’t enjoy me, objective check out the scene when Redford confronts him, and Saxon shows us a murderer using every ounce of control at his suppose to master his exasperate and retain from killing.

Gavin MacLeod and Tom Skerritt play fellow soldiers in the squad, and the stark dusky & white photography assists in setting the obedient mood for the account.

One responded to the emotional impact of killing by embracing it. He becomes an isolated, frosty and calm killing machine who creeps up at night and kills with a knife, then dances around the bodies. His only emotinal connection is with a young house boy. His influene on that child is chilling.

The second is embodied in the introdcution of Robert Redford to the conceal. The war seen through his eyes is tragic and wasteful. His bravery in confronting the sinister influence of the first soldier represents a nobility in a man that is in absorbing inequity to the dehumanizing effects of the war.

Some would argue that the film effects, representing the space of the art in 1961 give a dated feel that is distracting. However this lends a grittiness and documentary feel that enhances the message.

The popcorn will be forgotton. Effect if for a second feature of a grand lighter or laughable vein, as this heavy film is better digested in pieces over time than brooded over as the only idea slow in the evening.

Rather than review the screech of this almost universally beloved film, I’m unbiased going to comment about the quality of the 2006 60th Anniversary Edition DVD itself. I’ve since written an updated review about a unusual edition of this title, now available in a “Two-Disc Collector’s Plot.” Please catch that review — which was posted on December 13, 2008. (Amazon has posted my 2006 review in both places — even though the “60th Anniversary Edition” DVD is DIFFERENT from the “Two-Disc Collector’s Position”. Read my write-up for the “Two-Disc Collector’s State” — again, it’s DATED 2008 and too early to defective among the “most righteous” reviews — to better choose which product you assume.)

I’ve owned nearly every version of this title in almost every format available on home video during the past 25 years. It’s upright that the Assert of this Viacom/Paramount DVD — including its special features — is identical to the Republic Pictures Home Video release more than 10 years ago.

However, this 60th Anniversary edition is spectacular for several different and extremely principal reasons. (I’ll address the criticisms some people have leveled about the sound on this 2006 DVD in a limited bit, so stick with me.)

You don’t have to be a technical expert to immediately watch the striking improvement of the report AND sound in this 2006 edition. The print is crystal-clear and in my opinion, has more vividness and sharpness than ALL other previous releases of this title on home video.

Proof? I establish my “archaic” THX-version DVD issued by Republic Pictures / Artisan Home Video (the archaic DVD gold standard for this title) — into my Sony multi-changer DVD player — and watched and listened to every frame of this film AND its special features. I stopped and started this “older” DVD in several spots — and stopped and started the unusual 2006 Paramount edition repeatedly — so I could compare quality almost “side-by-side.”

Hands down — this 2006 version is astonishing. The spots and dirt have been wiped orderly, the sharpness and difference are arguably better than what film audiences saw 60 years ago. There are no primitive spots, no jumped frames and no lint, fiber or hair fragments along the edges or jumping across the veil. I bear the technicians at Paramount (which acquired Republic Pictures Home Video) — digitally cleaned EVERY frame of the last DVD release — so that the film now looks like a million dollars. It’s almost too pristine, if there is such a thing. No jump cuts, no “jump ahead” sound breaks, no fogged-out scenes, nothing obsolete — with the result being the cleanest and purest version of “It’s A Astonishing Life” ever issued in home video history.

It gets better. English subtitles were available on older DVD versions of this title, but the 2006 version has a cleaner typeface, wiping out some of the confusing and unnecessary attributions of “who’s saying what” that were disruptive to some hearing-impaired viewers. In this 2006 version, you’ll catch a mostly straight, line-by-line reading of what’s being said — as it’s being said.

Meanwhile, the DVD’s special features — which include the same pair of documentaries produced in 1990 and 1991 — are identical in that they were shot on video tape hence there isn’t considerable improvement in characterize quality. However, subtitles that WERE NOT available for these special features — are NOW available in this 2006 edition. The only “extra” to the previous “gold standard” that remains unchanged — is the current 1946 trailer. Subtitles are not available and it has the same raggedness and dirt commonly seen with vintage trailers stored separately from the films they traditional to advertise.

I’m highly considerable of re-issued DVDs that seem nothing more than an excuse to squeeze more dollars out of buyers for the same material with fresh packaging. But this 2006 Paramount DVD version of “It’s A Amazing Life” is the best to date. It is NOT in color. (I hold a colorized version for younger people who can’t stand black-and-white. Despite controversy surrounding colorization, know that the 2007 “Two-Disc Collector’s Region” has the same 2006 60th Anniversary black-and-white edition you gape here — plus a unusual “colorized” version. This version uses the same pristine print — but has the added bonus of boasting the best “color” hues ever seen for this film, using the latest image technology available. Despite my preference for black-and-white, the quality of this unusual colorized version is impressive.)

Meanwhile, let’s address the criticisms about the sound on this recent DVD. Go assist a slight bit. Powerful was made when Republic Pictures Home Video got the THX LucasFilm sound system seal of approval for “It’s A Unbelievable Life” during the 1990s. But it was mild two-channel mono with negligible equalization of sound effects. In this 2006 DVD, you’ll find consistent two-channel mono and decent sound equalization to minimize “booming” and over-modulated portions in the film. In the veteran versions, you had to turn down the volume a notch during the musical portions — and turn it befriend up when the dialogue came abet. It’s a nit-pick, but you really gawk the disagreement if you’re crazy enough to do a side-by-side comparison like I did.

As for the digital sound “pops” that perfectionists support bringing up — they’re proper. They’re even in the spots distinguished by another graceful reviewer who listed time codes where you can earn them. But in my opinion, unless you brace yourselves for them to come like a booming protest — unless you purposely crank up your speakers to carry sound throughout your house — yeah, you “might” be annoyed if you expect the same perfection for a film made in 1946 as you would for a film made in 2006. Honestly, the disproportionate attention given to these digital “pops” is, in my thought, giving fence-sitters the impression that they’re supersonic cracks of lightning that will create people jump out of their seats. I didn’t twitch at all. They almost “blended” into the 60-year-old soundtrack. Yes, I know they’re digital defects, but do you remember the zillion “pops” scattered throughout dirty prints of “It’s A Extraordinary Life” with filthy optical soundtracks? The audio on this 2006 DVD unruffled wins. You have EVERY Suitable to ask perfection for your dollars. But as a person who’s more fastidious than average — I don’t bear most buyers will care about a few “pops” in a film that’s this frail. Combine the overall improvements with the relatively vulgar cost of this DVD — and I peaceful say this is the BEST experience of “It’s A Fantastic Life” I’ve ever SEEN and HEARD on home video.

Finally, another reason to pick this DVD. It’s aged news to some, but it’s not widely known that this version of “It’s A Extraordinary Life” can only be broadcast by NBC. It old-fashioned to air a zillion times during the holidays on every TV situation on earth. It was a rapidly plan to earn tired of even a clean film you assume you know by heart. But Viacom/Paramount now owns this version of “It’s A Astonishing Life” outright and NBC has odd licensing rights to air it unbiased once or twice after Thanksgiving. This is a righteous thing for future generations to delight in.

So junk the traditional, pick this version and be gay. It may feel painful, but it’s worth it. And no, I DON’T work for Amazon OR for Paramount Home Video.

A beautifully crafted film that proved to be the apex of triple Oscar-winner (1934, 1936, 1938) Frank Capra’s celebrated career, and the epitome of his cycle of works celebrating the “current man”. Mr. Deeds found himself suddenly wealthy, Mr. Smith went to Washington as a Senator, and John Doe became the focus of a socio-political movement; but “Life”’s George Bailey never distinguishes himself outside of his slight hometown of Bedford Falls — his brother Harry is the one who becomes a war hero, and his friend Sam Wainwright is the one who achieves financial success. George’s triumph is simply his personal integrity, his code of ethics, and his strength of character — his goodness, if you will — during the unexciting course of his ordinary, mundane existence. In this respect, George is more an Everyman than any other Capra protagonist, animated strong audience identification and response.

In one of the most graceful performances ever given in an American film, James Stewart is excellent as George. It’s not an easy role to play because so considerable cover time is spent focusing on George’s subtle reactions to the world around him. One improbable moment comes at the yell status when George slowly begins to contain the news of his brother’s original marriage and novel career opportunity, and how his brother’s fortune will raze his contain hopes of leaving Bedford Falls and the family business. Stewart’s face is astonishing in this scene, as surprised realization fades into calm disappointment and finally, gentle graciousness and acceptance. Stewart’s tour de force is given strong encourage by a obliging cast of Capra stalwarts, including Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, H. B. Warner, and the phenomenal Beulah Bondi (as George’s mother) . The Republic Home Video DVD is definitely the edition of this classic to hold. Like the LaserDisc before it, the DVD offers a crystal obvious, beautifully restored film-to-video transfer which will amaze and delight anyone who is familiar only with the substandard multi-generational VHS cassettes, or the poor colorized version, that were commonly screened wait on in the leisurely 1970’s and 1980’s. There are some nice bonus features on the DVD, including a “making of” documentary and the theatrical trailer. This is one DVD that you’ll never regret adding to your home theatre collection!

Trivia note: If you’re a fan of this movie, try finding a copy of film historian David Thomson’s 1985 recent “Suspects” which continues George’s memoir and relates the characters from this movie to many others (did you know that Donna Reed’s “Mary Bailey” is actually the sister of Gene Tierney’s “Laura”?!, etc.) … enormous fun!

Set in the year of 2010, `Dictrict B13′ features two no-nonsense fighters Damian and Leito in the titular crime-infested position reach the city of Paris. Part buddy-buddy movie features crime-fighting Damian (stunt-turned actor Cyril Raffaelli, `Kiss of the Dragon’) and ex-thug Leito (David Belle), both of whom have to join forces to enact the missions of their absorb. Not powerful is current, I admit, as far as the script by Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri (the latter also appears as the mobster) is concerned, but we are not watching this film for the tale, and you should know it.

[EYE-POPPING STUNTS] The film will grab your attention from the opening fraction, where Leito runs away from the thugs sent from the gangster. For incredibly agile David Belle, jumping on the rooftops from one building to the other (like Jackie Chan in `Rumbles in Bronx’) is not enough. Before doing these breath-taking stunts, he actually climbs down on the wall of the building, jumping from a balcony to the one below. And that’s only the beginning of the eye-popping action sequences, in which like Buster Keaton he keeps running inside and outside of the buildings, and his rhythmical movements are often so fair that you might forget that he is really doing a death-defying actions.

[NO WIRE, NO CGI] Cyril Raffaelli is also immense, showing the martial arts skills only the right stunt persons can snarl. You impartial have to peruse their stunts that are done by the actors themselves without using any wire and special effects (that’s why it was shot in Romania, where the regulations are less strict) . Their stunts remind the film fans of one Thai movie `Ong-Bak,’ but the stunts in this French actioner are done in a different style with more vertical movements and less bone-crunching fighting. And they are both fabulous.

This is a non-stop French action hugely bewitching with wonderful actions. You may not like the preposterous fable, but once these actions commence, you fair cannot blink a second.

One of the best action adventure movies I have ever seen. Profitable tale, sufficient surprises and dwelling twists. Faced paced action and well edited. The IMDB.com reviews say it all.

The star actors are athletes displaying their abilities in the newest sport called, Parkour. It is a type of hybrid gain of running and jumping in urban settings, inspired by the martial arts. All stunts were performed by the well-known actors, themselves.

The English dub track is intended for a British audience, but that is not too distracting. Wintry music soundtrack that adds to the suspense.

I bought this because I could not rent it. Joyful I bought it. Worth the $30 or so.

When abrasive Novel Yorker Robin Monroe (Anne Heche) and her boyfriend Frank (David Schwimmer), head out to an idyllic Polynesian island for some R&R, all is well until Robin’s boss in Recent York calls her and begs Robin to glide to neighboring Tahiti to occupy on an urgent assignment. Reluctantly, Robin agrees and approaches the local island-hopping pilot, Quinn (Harrison Ford) . Quinn agrees to sail Robin to Tahiti, but during the flight, they are beset by a thunderstorm and forced to crash-land on a deserted island. Shipwrecked, two completely opposite personalities clash and arrive together in a series of highly bewitching and delectable adventures, including basic survival, a run-in with off-shore murderous pirates, and overcoming the odds to dwelling about escaping from the island. The scenery is comely, offset by a tremendous soundtrack, and Ford is at his comedic best playing a tipsy, laid-back playboy whose South Pacific laisse-faire is a perfect foil for Heche’s highly strung city-girl character.

Ford and Heche do wonders with the standard stuck-on-a-desert-island area, and instead of being mundane it shines with trusty humor and unexpected twists and turns. Both actors show a honest affinity for hilarious one-liners and unsuspected tender moments. A palatable movie. Highly recommended.

I saw this on cable many moons ago and laughed my butt off! I went out and bought it the next day. I composed survey this movie and be pleased it even though I know the site. Common bit: Harrison Ford strangling the bush! Clever dialogue, interesting performances and an all around fun adventure! Check out the soon to be Jango Fett as the leader of the pirates! The only liability is the always annoying David Schwimmer, but he does a superior job in this one (and isn’t in it as great as the leads, thank God) Anyway rent it consume it or whatever, I did.

I should have known when I saw this was a follow on from Fairytopia that I would be disappointed. This is the sage of Elina, who in the movie Fairytopia saved her country of Fairytopia and gained her wings. In this she is sent an urgent message from the Prince of Mermaidia (who briefly appeared in Fairytopia) who asks for her to wait on him. The movie is paunchy of the trials and tribulations she goes through for him, along with his girlfriend Nori. I demand it is deliberate they have named the Mermaid heroine after Japanese Edible seaweed but it seems ill-considered.

Anyway – the gracious things about the movie, it is brightly coloured, and the costumes for the characters are attractive, when Elina becomes a mermaid she looks impartial heavenly. There are really nice messages in this – about overcoming jealousy, selflessness, sharing and the power of team work. Some of these messages are laid on with a trowel, but on the other hand it is for young children and I assume the message needs to be strong. And lets win sincere here, the movies aren’t aimed at adults. However I thinksome of hte best movies are those that can easily be watched by Adults and children together – and the best Barbie movie (I believe) was Princess and the Pauper where I serene win it easy to sit down with my kids and recognize it. Perhaps it is something children like, but I remove the mature animation, certainly the mix of the two was unsettling at times. Lastly, there is a moment when Elina and Nori acquire marks of courage which eye like tatoos – call me conservative, but I don’t want my under 5 year conventional even thinking a tatoo is frigid – no matter what acquire it takes.

There were some genuinely well-behaved moments in this film and despite its faults my children have watched it a couple of times, but it doesn’t really interest them in the blueprint that the early dancing ones (swan lake for instance or Princess and the Pauper) I really hope the next movie planned is one of these sort.

These four episodes are a bit fragmented, but it does a safe job answering viewers’ questions, while detached leaving some mysteries (how does Yoruichi discover Yoshino? ) up in the air.

And it has the usual blend of comedy and action that “Bleach” usually does — on one hand, the Bount dolls provide some wall-smashing violence and creepy unpredictability (Uryu even gets throttled by one) . But the modsouls also provide some comedy, especially when Ichigo, Orihime and Chad all go on the hunt for appropriate plush toys for them to inhabit (“You can’t be so picky! The only stuffed animals left are some heinous ol’ drool-covered ones from when Karin and Yuzu were unprejudiced babies!”) .

But these episodes do have a few flaws — Ichigo and Renji seem to use half their time squirting testosterone at each other. Seriously, the alpha male thunder is verging on parody. And Rukia’s inclusion while she’s not yet powered up feels rather contrived.

Fortunately that’s the only true characterization pickle. But the Bounts offer some promise for conflict (especially the charming, cross Kariya), and the Soul Reapers are woven expertly into the storyline, including some underused favorites like Ukitake, Kyoraku, Soi Fon, and the acid-tongued boy-genius Hitsugaya (“Arresting, Rangiku. Then I command that mountain of files hidden over there leisurely the sofa is objective my imagination”) .

“Bleach 17″ suffers from a slightly fragmented series of episodes, but it’s a promising begin to this anime-only arc. And it promises to bag more curious in the next round…
